【Indian Motorcycles Tests Prototype Chief】
12/18/2007 By Bryan Harley
The Indian Motorcycle Company is testing prototypes of the 2009 Indian Chief and is aiming for a fall 2008 release. Though Indian Chairman Stephen Julius initially hoped to have the new line out in late 2007, Julius made it clear that the company would not hurry to market until the bike met their high level of expectations.
This is a refreshing change of pace from the last buyers of the iconic American motorcycle company who gambled more on the marque's marketability than on producing high-quality, reliable bikes.
The initial platform will be comprised of several variations of the Chief in "various segments of the heavyweight cruiser market." Whether this translates to Chiefs of varying displacements or full-blown baggers we don't know, but will try to give you the scoop as soon as Indian releases more info.
Until then, initial photos of the 2009 Chief show that the bike has many of the definitive Indian traits - deeply valanced fenders front and back, big, comfy-looking leather seats with chrome studs and the signature Indian headdress logo prominently displayed on the tank all centered around a big chrome V-Twin.
The new Chiefs will be offered with a wide range of factory-designed-and-fitted personalization options including seats and saddlebags, wheels, fenders, and classic Crimson and 21st century hand-painted color schemes.
The '09 Chief will be powered by Indian's proprietary PowerPlus engine with electronic fuel injection. The powertrain components will be constructed in-house at Indian's Kings Mountain facility.
The last rendition of the PowerPlus was a 100ci 45-degree V-Twin good for 1638cc. While outsourcing the engine would have been the easy way to go, Julius stated in a prior interview "There's no way we could buy an engine from a third party. It's taking us longer, but I think long term we're doing the right thing."
The flagship Indian dealership is under construction just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. It is the first of 50 scheduled to be built and opened within the next 36 months throughout the United States.
Each of the initial 50 Indian dealerships will "feature interior space devoted to selling and servicing Indians and official Indian parts and accessories and will be staffed by an experienced general manager/Indian enthusiast and factory-certified mechanics."
"It's only natural that we'd want our flagship dealership close to home and the site down the road at Lowell perfectly meets all the criteria we've established for our franchised dealers' locations," Julius said at the groundbreaking ceremony.
"What we're looking for, and demanding, is dealers willing to build an exclusively Indian business for the long term. This themed, single-purpose building going up here in North Carolina is a concrete, steel, and glass manifestation of that."
